They’re a Baltic ethnic group as are the Lithuanians. The two languages are related and at one time were mutually intelligible.

Interesting, I didn’t know that. I’m guessing Lithuania veered away culturally from Latvia during the time of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth?
